According to the latest report by Bloomberg (Paywall), Apple is planning to enter the AI space soon with its take on ChatGPT. The report notes that Apple has been working on its own framework as well as a Large Language Model (LLM) that has the potential to power what Apple employees are calling “Apple GPT”. The Cupertino giant had first established Ajax foundation last year to unify machine learning development but now is focused primarily on Generative AI technologies. Apple is working on new tools and services that take advantage of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) to compete with the likes of OpenAI and others. Last year, Apple was caught off guard as OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google launched their versions of chatbots, taking advantage of the advancements in Generative AI technologies. It was a huge pleasure to host Arka Dhar at our IEPC event last week on “AI for Good”. While there are many people speaking on this topic, few are as well informed as Arka, the current Product Lead at OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, and also a recent graduate of our Sloan Programme. Arka’s expertise in artificial intelligence (AI) and his insightful discussion on “AI for good” left a lasting impact on the attendees. In the first step, the system is trained on vast amounts of unlabelled data, which makes it superior to other models in terms of flexibility when creating texts or other sequences. The potential problems don’t stop there – eminent AI expert and philosopher Nick Bostrom has recently said he believes the newest generation of AI chatbots (such as GPT-4) are even beginning to show signs of sentience. Which could create a whole new moral and ethical quandary if as a society we are planning to start creating and operationalizing them on a large scale. A generalized AI is one that is theoretically capable of carrying out many different types of tasks, even ones it wasn’t originally created to carry out, much the same way as a naturally intelligent entity (such as a human) can.

Personal data and confidential information should not be inputted into Chat GPT as there is a risk, if not a probability, that Chat GPT will use the data and reproduce it for other users. There have always been grey areas in academic misconduct – a parent editing an essay, too much peer exchange, taking inspiration from existing essays online, etc. Much like the advent of the printing press to typewriters and calculators to Google, what start as perceived threats to the status quo quickly become the new status quo.
